The whole gay issue is very prominent in the media these days, what with gay 'marriage' and the whole Russian situation. On television the soaps regularly carry a gay story line. Casualty recently had the story of a gay Iranian illegal immigrant trying to escape persecution because of his homosexuality. The male nurse who was also gay tried to help him and it turned out that the Iranian was having an 'affair' with the married bisexual boss who had illegally employed him.

Why am I saying this? A friend whom I have known for nearly thirty years defriended and blocked me on Facebook. She accused me of focussing upon and hating gay people and suggested that I pick on other people, maybe adulterers, murderers or thieves or whoever. Now this seems to be a common response by some to any who hold a different opinion and especially a Biblical viewpoint. What did I actually do and say to cause such an emotional response? Well, giving an opionion about homosexual behaviour based upon what I see as a Biblical perspective and responding to an issue highlighted and regularly reported upon in the media.

The favored accusation is that any opinion which states that homosexual behaviour is wrong is homophobic, which according to accusers, means that a person is a 'gay hater'. Firstly, this word is such a misnomer. If one takes a Greek foundation for the term, it means 'one who is afraid of the same' but that doesn't make any sense. A Latin foundation would give 'one who is afraid of humans' which would probably apply to hermits but not 'gay haters'. If a word could be created it would include 'mis' (misogynist - hater of women etc), arsen (male) and koite (to bed, sleep with, have sex with) and this would give the term misarsekoite for men and changing arsen to thelu - misthelukoite for women. But the main point is that criticism of a gay lifestyle is not hatred of gay people but a matter of opinion and belief based upon the Bible. Apparently, reflecting biblical teaching and saying that gay behaviour is wrong shows a lack of humility, kindness, understanding and forgiveness. Listen, nobody is advocating death or jail or any other penalty for gay people. For Christians to say that homosexual behaviour is wrong is the same as saying adultery, theft, lying or any other sexual deviation is wrong and requires repentance and a lifestyle change. That may involve sacrifice and struggle, as is the case with all who come to Christ and battle with sin in their lives. Repentance is the key for us all. From that comes forgiveness and forgiveness brings peace and contentment and ultimately resurrection life.

Ostensibly, my friend doesn't know me that well because she seems to have the idea that gay people are excluded from my life or that I have deliberately ostricised gays. Down through the years my friends (including Christians) and colleagues have included gay people and a close relative is gay. I would never wish harm upon or refuse friendship to any gay person but based upon Biblical principles the onus is upon me and every other Christian to warn of the dangers and outcome of a sinful lifestyle.

So, 'gay hater'? No.

I guess she'll never read it but this is the response I wrote before realising I'd been blocked:
"I don't hate I'm just saying as it is. Never once did I say the Lord doesn't love gays - he does. Shocking though it might seem I actually have friends who are gay. It's the sin which needs to be highlighted, just like lying, thieving, adultery, divorce, murder etc. We must never force our views and try to change the way people want to be but at the same time we must not pretend that the lifestyle is okay with God. It's sin, no different to mine or yours and needs repentance and a change of lifestyle. I'm not trying to hate but warn. It's up to the person whether they want to heed it or not. You and I belong to the Lord not because we are better or more righteous but because we are sinners saved by his grace and I just want to see more sinners saved by grace. But it's on his terms not ours.
I just hope I haven't spoiled a good friendship. Take care Laura.

What does the Bible say?

God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27)

You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination. ‘Also you shall not have intercourse with any animal to be defiled with it, nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it; it is a perversion. ‘Do not defile yourselves by any of these things; for by all these the nations which I am casting out before you have become defiled.” (Leviticus 18:22–24)

For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,” (Romans 1:26–28)

And [Jesus] was saying, “That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications (any sexual deviation including homosexuality), thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. “All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”” (Mark 7:20–23)

But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.” (1 Timothy 1:8–11)

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God......

...Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9–11

Jesus said “But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.” (Mark 10:6)

It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.” (1 Timothy 1:15

“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”” (Mark 1:15)
